Trump’s Tax Returns Should Be Made Public Immediately
Statement of Robert Weissman, President, Public Citizen
Note: Today, members of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and others, called on President Donald Trump to release his tax returns.
Public Citizen supports Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Reps. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), Richard Neal (D-Mass.), Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) and Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.) as they file an important discharge petition on Rep. Eshoo’s Presidential Tax Transparency Act. The petition would force a vote on the bipartisan legislation that would require President Trump, and all future presidents and nominees, to disclose their tax returns to the American people.
The American people must be able to the trust their president. Releasing his tax returns is an obvious step toward building that trust and support transparent and open government. As questions mount about the potentially corrupt and interconnected business dealings of the president and how they may impact his policy and personnel decisions, the only way to disinfect the murky confusion is with disclosure. We encourage the Congress to continue to demand a vote on Trump’s tax transparency and shine a light on conflicts of interest.
