Trump’s Extreme Nominee to Direct the Bureau of Land Management Withdrawn
Statement of Robert Weissman, President, Public Citizen
Note: Multiple media outlets today reported that the White House will withdraw the nomination of anti-environmental extremist William Perry Pendley to lead the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. However, Pendley is expected to remain as the de facto head of the agency despite multiple legal challenges to his authority. Public Citizen opposed his nomination.
William Perry Pendley has no place in the U.S. government. Pendley has expressed racist and anti-Indigenous views on multiple occasions. He has consistently advocated for a radical agenda of selling off public lands and allowing corporate interests to run rampant. President Trump’s Senate Republican allies appear uncomfortable voting to confirm such a controversial nominee. They should be similarly uncomfortable with allowing Pendley to keep working for the federal government. Today should be his last day in government. Pendley must go.
