Trump’s Budget Proposal is a Moral Obscenity

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House today released the president’s proposed budget for FY 27. Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“The Trump-Vought budget proposal is a moral obscenity. The $500 billion annual increase in proposed Pentagon spending — if it were instead deployed humanely — would be enough to solve or meaningfully address the nation’s great problems, from health care to day care, from the climate crisis to affordable housing, from improving schools to making college education affordable.

“Instead, Trump and Vought propose to spend an unfathomable amount on a Pentagon that can’t even pass an audit to further empower an out-of-control and incompetent leader in Pete Hegseth.

“They compound the outrage by proposing deep cuts in programs America desperately needs, from energy efficiency to advancing fair housing policy.

“Trump is once again telling us that our priorities must take a backseat to war, terror, and bombastic vanity projects, including tens of billions of dollars for monuments to himself. Spending on things regular Americans care about like housing, environmental protection, and education programs are cut by 10% in this atrocious budget. As usual, the priorities of the people are simply unimportant to this administration as they think about spending our tax payer dollars.

“The Trump-Vought budget is also an assault on democracy. It again mocks the congressional appropriations process by providing, late, just the gesture of a budget, not a detailed proposal. This unrepentantly builds on a record of illegal and unconstitutional impoundments. And the budget proposal openly talks about building a base defense budget through use of reconciliation. Democrats must not put their heads in the sand and approve a Pentagon budget through appropriations that they know will be supplemented by a giant $350 billion plus-up from reconciliation.

“Republicans and Democrats in Congress should treat this proposal with all the care it deserves and immediately hit delete.”

Note: There is already massive opposition to this budget framework. Hundreds of organizations have opposed both any increase in Iran War funding and Trump’s obscene Pentagon budget increase.
