Trump Dangerously Expands Fake Emergency Powers Over D.C.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump just issued another executive order expanding his administration’s authoritarian grip on our capital city, under the guise of addressing a manufactured “crime emergency.” The order directs multiple departments, including the Department of Defense (which the president is preparing to rename to the “Department of War”) to devote more militarized resources to control the city.
In response, Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert issued the following statement:
“Freedom of speech and the right to assembly are foundational constitutional rights, and the Posse Comitatus Act prevents the use of the military domestically. The moves outlined in this overreaching and unnecessary executive action undercut those foundational rights and are egregious steps by a wanna-be-dictator who is placing the pursuit of power above the well-being of our country.”
