Toyota Sustainability Report Glosses Over Impact of Emissions

WASHINGTON — Toyota Motor Corp. of North America released its 2025 Environmental Sustainability Report last week. The report comes shortly after Akio Toyoda, the anti-EV Chairman of Toyota Motor Company, posed with a MAGA hat and a Trump-Vance t-shirt at a NASCAR event in Japan. In response, Adam Zuckerman, senior clean vehicles campaigner with Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:

“In its report Toyota claims that ‘respect for the planet’ is one of its core values, but it has disrespected the planet at every turn, working to dismantle the regulations that protect the planet. Despite its claims, Toyota has become the most aggressive automotive anti-climate lobbyist and the largest automotive funder of climate deniers in Congress.”

“Buried deep in Toyota’s glossy report is the inconvenient truth that emissions from its cars are actually increasing, warming the planet, and poisoning the air that we breathe. Toyota claims that 83% of its models have ‘electrified’ options, a term that Toyota popularized to mislead consumers into thinking its hybrid vehicles are electric. In truth, hybrids are just somewhat more efficient gas-powered cars. Toyota is still failing to produce electric vehicles at scale, explaining why its 2023 model year—the latest info the company provides—had higher CO2 emissions per mile than its 2022 model year.”

“While Toyota pays lip service to engaging stakeholders to green its supply chain, it ranked near the bottom of Lead the Charge’s supply chain leaderboard. It is the only company evaluated since 2023 that has not improved its score on supply chain sustainability and decarbonization at all.”
