Tonight: Medicare for All Powerhouses Launch Week of Action With Virtual Town Hall
Reps. Omar and Pressley Join Activists to Highlight Efforts Around the Country to Push for Medicare for All
WHAT: Public Citizen and allies will host a virtual town hall with Medicare for All supporters to focus on translating the growing momentum for Medicare for All into broad-based public education and congressional action.
U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), a local lawmaker, and national and grassroots leaders will urge advocates to press their local governments to pass resolutions in support of Medicare for All. The town hall launches a week of action, where local activists around the country are pushing their city and county councils to adopt resolutions in support of Medicare for All. Active local resolution efforts are underway in more than 200 localities, with resolutions already passed in 20 localities, including Philadelphia; Tampa, Fla.; Tucson, Ariz.; Detroit; and Cook County, Ill.
The speakers will emphasize that Medicare for All legislation would provide comprehensive medical coverage for everyone in the U.S., eliminate out-of-pocket health care costs, vastly increase physician and hospital choice, and save money on health care for families and for the system as a whole. The speakers will explore how to further grow this grassroots movement.
Omar, who is a vicechair of the House Medicare for All Caucus and Pressley, who is also an enthusiastic co-sponsor of Medicare for All legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives, will take questions during the town hall. Already, 2,000 people have signed up to participate, with dozens of watch parties planned around the country.
Along with the town hall, rallies and local actions will be held around the country this week, including in Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas and New London, Conn., at which people will demand Congress pass Medicare for All legislation.
