Tonight: MAGA Republicans to Shut Down the Government in Service to Trump’s Dystopian Agenda
WASHINGTON, D.C. — MAGA Republicans are about to shut down the government tonight after refusing to negotiate the budget with Democrats, causing completely avoidable harm to the country. In response, Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert issued the following statement:
“This harmful and perfectly avoidable government shutdown is the natural conclusion of the MAGA agenda. For months now, President Trump and Republicans in Congress have been shutting the government down little by little, firing workers randomly, withholding funding for cancer research, and taking away health care from millions of Americans. The budget battle leverage moment is being utilized appropriately by Democrats to push for a truly bipartisan negotiation which would begin to undo some of this damage.
“Any final bill must return health care to regular Americans and create guardrails to stop the illegal undercutting of the congressional power of the purse that has been perpetrated by Russell Vought and this administration. No budget deal will mean anything if we know the president could come along at any moment and pull back funding he doesn’t like. Public Citizen strongly supports a funding bill that stops Trump’s healthcare cuts and keeps the appropriations process from descending into further chaos.”
