The Time Is Now to Fix Our Elections

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republicans today voted down moving forward to debate the Freedom to Vote Act. Lisa Gilbert, executive vice president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“We’ve reached a pivotal crossroads for the nation. Today, Senate Republicans yet again made the shameful choice to put partisan politics ahead of the strength of our democracy. Democrats must use any means necessary to move the critical Freedom to Vote Act. The filibuster, an arcane rule of procedure, must not be more important than maintaining a democracy that can deliver for the people.

“The gravity of this moment is unlike anything that this country has been through. It is not an overstatement to say the health of our union depends on it. Improving access to the polls, ensuring the safety of our elections, and getting big money out of politics are long overdue reforms, and we can’t afford to wait to heal our system. The time is now to show our mettle and prove that out government can still work.”
