Senate Must Vote Against Republicans’ Anti-Voter Legislation Aimed to Disrupt Midterms
The “Save America Act” would harm millions of eligible voters
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would make it significantly harder, if not outright impossible, for millions of eligible voters to register to vote and cast a ballot.
House Republicans relaunched efforts to advance the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (or the so-called SAVE Act), this time with two new iterations of that legislation (the Make Elections Great Again Act (MEGA) and the Save America Act). While under new names, these bills are part of the same effort by Republican members of Congress to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters from participating in upcoming elections.
Public Citizen Co-President Lisa Gilbert issued the following statement:
“Congressional Republicans are attempting to commandeer the midterm election cycle and increase voting margins in President Trump’s favor by putting a finger on the scale of our elections and pushing nonsensical, anti-democratic laws to stop voters from casting a ballot.
“This overreaching, un-American bill tacks on unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles to vote, all of which would harm voters across the political spectrum.
“The Senate must not pass this legislation, and instead Congress should focus on overturning Citizens United in order to counter one of the real threats against our elections – massive corporate donations.”
