SCOTUS Ruling Represents a Decisive Blow to Trump’s Cruel and Authoritarian Agenda

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Supreme Court ruled in Trump v. Illinois to block the deployment of the National Guard to Chicago.

Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, issued the following statement:

“The Trump regime has sought to deploy the National Guard around the country to intimidate the citizenry and facilitate the administration’s cruel and inhumane mass detention agenda.

“In case after case, governors and local law enforcement have actively opposed National Guard deployment, emphasizing that there is no civil strife to justify such measures. The administration has offered up pretextual factual claims and extreme legal theories to justify the deployments, and courts around the country have ruled against the administration. Today, a Supreme Court which looks very kindly on broad claims of executive power has ruled that the National Guard deployments — at least as justified in the Illinois case — cannot move forward.

“With a lawful administration that understood the limits of executive power, this would be the end of the question. Unfortunately, we are living under an authoritarian regime that persists in every possible effort to expand its power and override guardrails. With an administration that displays utter disregard for the Constitution, we must now watch diligently how it will respond to a decisive Supreme Court decision against its lawless power grab.”
