Republican Censure Effort Against Rep. Mclver is ‘Craven, Vindictive’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Republicans are forcing a vote this week to censure congresswoman LaMonica Mclver and expel her from the Homeland Security Committee. Mclver was the target of a political indictment accusing her of “interfering with federal law enforcement officers” while she was conducting an oversight visit to an ICE facility.

In response, Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert issued the following statement:

“As if the indictment targeting Representative Mclver over the summer weren’t egregious enough, House Republicans are now pursuing further theatrics and punitive measures against Mclver for simply doing her job of conducting oversight over the lawless Trump administrations. Republicans’ pandering deference to their dear leader has them vindictively lashing out against anyone who shows us that you can choose to be principled in this moment and provide a check against Trump’s powergrab.

“Whatever the outcome of this vote, history will remember Representative Mclver for standing up when her country needed her to, and Republicans for their craven abdication of responsibility at a critical chapter in our country’s history.”
