Public Citizen to Urge FEC to Rein in Out-of-Control Election Spending
Experts to Urge Disclosure of Donor Identities, Regulation of Joint Fundraising Committees and Elimination of Coordination Between Super PACs and Candidates
WHAT: Two Public Citizen experts will urge the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to rein in out-of-control election spending as part of testimony at a hearing on aggregate campaign limits.
In April 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission struck down limits on the aggregate amounts people can donate to candidates, political parties and political committees. Now, after receiving more than 32,000 public comments since December about the issue of money in politics, the FEC is holding its first public hearing since 2012 to receive feedback from the public on the implications of this decision.
Lisa Gilbert, director of Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division, and Craig Holman, Public Citizen’s Congress Watch government affairs lobbyist, will detail the negative effects the McCutcheon ruling had on our election system. They will call on the agency to increase the disclosure of campaign funders, regulate joint fundraising committees and eliminate coordination between super PACs and candidates.
WHEN: Wed., Feb. 11. Holman will speak at 9:30 a.m. Gilbert will speak at 2 p.m. Panel discussions are from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m.; public testimony goes from 10:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and starts again at 4 p.m.
