Public Citizen Statement on Biden’s Transformative Ethics Rules

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The incoming Biden administration reportedly plans to release an ethics executive order on day one. According to the press, the new rules will ban incoming officials from receiving compensation from their previous employer for taking a government job. For departing administration employees, the order prohibits lobbying for at least the length of Biden’s term, as well as a one-year restriction on assisting lobbying efforts.

Lisa Gilbert, executive vice president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“If the plan is as currently being reported, this policy goes further than we have ever seen in a presidential ethics plan. It will crackdown on shadow lobbying jobs, end golden parachutes intended to seat corporate insiders in government, and halt the rapidly spinning revolving door. Boldness is needed in this moment to restore the people’s faith in government and this policy takes a critical step in the right direction.”
