Public Citizen Joins Thousands at Texas Capitol for Voting Rights Rally

Beto O'Rourke, Texas Democrats Condemn GOP Supression Efforts

By Michael Coleman

Thousands of Texans gathered on the South Lawn of the Texas Capitol Sunday evening for a rousing rally in support of voting rights in Texas and against efforts by Republican lawmakers to suppress this fundamental right.

Headlined by former Congressman Beto O’Rourke and a slate of Texas lawmakers, the rally was optimistic, energetic and electrifying as speaker after speaker articulated the importance of the moment.

Although Texas Democratic lawmakers were able to kill SB7 on the House floor in the final hours of the 87th Texas Legislature, the battle isn’t over as Abbott has vowed to call lawmakers back for a special session on the voter suppression bills.

Public Citizen’s Austin staffers were in attendance on Sunday and we’ll continue to join in this fight for democracy in Texas. We hope you’ll join us in protecting the fundamental American right to vote in the weeks and months ahead. As O’Rourke told the cheering crowd Sunday night: “We are going to fight on every front until this democracy represents everyone in America!”
