Public Citizen Calls on Sen. Menendez to Resign After Bribery Conviction
Washington, D.C. – Today, a jury of 12 New Yorkers found Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) guilty of 16 federal criminal charges, including bribery, extortion, and honest services fraud, related to a sweeping corruption scheme.
Last fall, Menendez was indicted by federal prosecutors based on evidence that he “provided sensitive U.S. Government information and took other steps that secretly aided the Government of Egypt.” When searching his home, investigators found at least $480,000 in cash and over $100,000 in gold bars believed to be illegal payments for official actions Menendez took.
Public Citizen co-president Lisa Gilbert issued the following statement:
“Public Citizen is calling for Sen. Robert Menendez to resign immediately. No U.S. Senator or public official should be allowed to abuse their power for personal gain and get away with it. Senator Menendez is not above the law, and we applaud the U.S. Justice Department for bringing this case and the jury of New Yorkers for their service.”
