Political Violence Should Have No Place in America
Public Citizen statement on the tragic killing of Charlie Kirk
Public Citizen co-presidents Lisa Gilbert and Robert Weissman issued the following statement on the tragic killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk:
“The assassination of Charlie Kirk was heinous and immoral.
“It is a tragedy for his family and a danger for the nation. Every act of political violence threatens a worsening cycle that is fundamentally antithetical to democracy and popular rule. Murder does more than illegitimately silence the voice of the targeted person. Heightened threat levels make others pull back or drop out. Rational if heated discourse is displaced by fear and intimidation. Chaos is used to justify political crackdowns. Ultimately, guns rule instead of the people.
“Every decent and humane person should condemn this assassination. Every person and especially political leaders should look to lower the temperature rather than fuel rage and violence.”
