On President’s Better Politics Speech
Statement of Lisa Gilbert, Director of Public Citizen’s Congress Watch Division
The president just spoke strongly on the need to create a better politics by “dealing with corrosive influence of money.” He spoke of the dark money problems in our system and the domination of our nation’s political spending by only 150 wealthy families. Millions stand united in the request of the president to follow up on this rhetoric with action.
We wait poised for a package of federal reforms, centered around an executive order requiring federal contractors to disclose political spending, to complement the important policy he has advocated in the states. We look forward to authoritative action on the two sides of the democracy coin: getting more participation in our politics by reforming our voting system, and taking the secret money out.
