Michigan Leads the Way in Fighting Future Election Subversion

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Public Citizen today is celebrating the overwhelming passage of a pro-democracy ballot measure in Michigan. Proposal 2, also known as “Promote the Vote 2022,” protects Michigan voters from intimidation, makes voting more accessible, and ensures that every vote cast is counted. Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“Democracy was on the ballot in Michigan yesterday – and democracy won.

“Michigan’s passage of Proposal 2 is a huge victory for Michiganders and for our country. Proposal 2 enshrines the right to vote in the state’s constitution, with protections to make it harder for partisan efforts to steal elections. The voters in this battleground state agreed that the right to vote is sacred, and that Michigan should not be a safe haven for election subversion.

“Presented with a straightforward vote on measures to strengthen democracy, Michigan voters overwhelmingly said yes. There’s a crucial lesson here: Stripped away from the noise and disinformation, Americans do believe in protecting and expanding our democracy.

“Public Citizen was proud to support this effort by Promote the Vote, in partnership with Voters Not Politicians, League of Women Voters of Michigan, and dozens of state and national organizations.”
