Mecklenburg County, NC Commissioners Unanimously Pass “Medicare for All” Resolution

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Overnight, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners passed the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center on a historic resolution supporting Medicare for All.

The resolution adds Mecklenburg to other North Carolina communities—including Carrboro, Durham, Orange County, and Greensboro—and more than 130 communities nationwide endorsing federal Medicare for All legislation (HR-3069 in the House; S-1506 in the Senate).

The resolution was welcomed by Representative Alma Adams (NC-12), who represents Mecklenburg County in the U.S. House of Representatives and a cosponsor of HR-3069.

“Today, I proudly stand with the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners as they pass this resolution in support of the Medicare for All Act,” said Adams. “In Mecklenburg County, we know that healthcare is about more than just access—it’s about strengthening and expanding the programs that already work. Medicare is a lifeline for millions.  It is a basic human right and we must not only protect it, but build upon it to ensure that every American, regardless of income, age or background, can live with the healthcare they deserve.  I am pleased to support Medicare for All in Congress and urge my colleagues at the federal, state and local level to support it as well.”

“It’s promising to see the government of Mecklenburg County, one of the major metropolitan areas of the U.S. South, announce support for Medicare for All,” said Brittany Shanahan, Public Citizen Medicare for All organizer. “At the same time Trump and his allies in Congress are driving through a disastrous agenda to cut Medicaid and compromise the significant gains since the state expanded Medicaid in 2023, the Mecklenburg County Commission is setting an example for what true leadership looks like.”

“Local governments are left to pick up the pieces of our broken healthcare system when the federal government hollows out public insurance programs like Medicaid,” said Dr. Doug B. Robinson, chairman of Healthcare Justice North Carolina. “By voting for this resolution, Mecklenburg County is taking a stand for guaranteed quality, affordable healthcare for everyone in the United States. Our local resolution helps to shape the national dialogue and build momentum for national healthcare reform by supporting the 2025 Medicare for All Act.

“With most Americans  fighting for scraps to survive for scraps to survive in a world that is very unfamiliar, I believe that the single payer insurance policy can help all Americans in these uncertain times, especially our labor force which keeps this country going,” said Chris Barrett, president of Charlotte-Metrolina Labor Council, IAMAW 1725.

“Healthcare should be a right, not a privilege,” said Laura Meier, Mecklenburg County commissioner who spearheaded the resolution. “Medicare for All ensures that no one is denied care because of cost, job status, or insurance loopholes—it’s about dignity, equity, and putting people over profits. We will be facing a healthcare crisis when Medicaid cuts begin to take effect. Medicare for All would be the solution!”

“This is not the end of the conversation,” said Rev.  Dr. Janet Garner-Mullins, Ed, D., MAEd, AET. “This is the beginning of the movement. Let us keep showing up. Let us keep speaking out. Let us keep building a county where mercy means more than money and justice lives here.”
