Maryland Protects Election Officials Ahead of November Elections

“No One Should Be Threatened at Work”

Washington, D.C. — Yesterday Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed legislation that criminalizes threats or coercion directed towards an election official. Maryland joins 16 states that have enacted protections for election workers since 2022. In response, Jalisa Giles, Secure Our Vote campaign coordinator with Public Citizen, released the following statement.

“No one should be threatened at work. Election officials have faced growing threats, intimidation and doxing since 2020, and many have left their jobs as a result. We applaud Maryland for protecting its election workers ahead of November.

“We need many more states to follow the lead of Maryland, Indiana, and Washington, all of which have passed legislation so far this year criminalizing threats to these essential workers in our democracy.”
