Keystone XL Approval Will Hurt Americans for Generations

Statement of David Arkush, Managing Director of Public Citizen’s Climate Program

It’s been clear for years that the Keystone XL pipeline is bad for America, and that’s why the State Department once rejected it.

Public Citizen’s 2013 analysis showed that the pipeline would raise gas prices for consumers and undermine U.S energy security by sending oil abroad that would otherwise be sold in the U.S. The pipeline is also the wrong direction on energy infrastructure and climate change. The best way to lower energy bills, create jobs and improve U.S. energy security is to invest in a rapid transition to 100 percent renewables in the electricity and transportation sectors – and to stop digging up the ground beneath our feet and burning it. Those steps are also precisely what we must to do stave off a global warming catastrophe.

This decision shows again that President Trump favors his fossil fuel cronies over American families. The move is not surprising, but it’s still a terrible decision that will hurt Americans for generations.
