In Strict Party-Line Vote, Senate Republicans Confirm Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services
Statements of Public Citizen Experts
Note: Early today, the U.S. Senate, in a party-line vote, confirmed President Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, U.S. Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga). Public Citizen has called for investigations by the Office of Congressional Ethics and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission into Price’s stock trading.
“President Trump’s new top health care official, Secretary Price, has demonstrated through his policy positions a remarkable level of callousness regarding the well-being and access to health care for the elderly and the poor, our nation’s most vulnerable populations. It will be imperative for Americans to rise up to defend against assaults from Secretary Price and President Trump on our health care.”
– Steven Knievel, access to medicines advocate, Public Citizen’s Access to Medicines program
“Tom Price has serious allegations of corruption and insider trading swirling all around him. Yet, in a move that shirks the responsibility of the Senate, Republicans rammed Price’s confirmation through without proper vetting and without bipartisan support. The Trump administration, with Price at the helm of HHS, is well on the way to becoming the most corrupt and scandal-ridden in recent history.”
