In Historic First for the Federal Reserve, Dr. Lisa Cook Confirmed by Senate
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dr. Lisa Cook, esteemed professor of economics and international relations, today received confirmation from the U.S. Senate to join the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. With the historic vote, Dr. Cook will become the first African American woman to join the governing board of the U.S. central bank.
In response to today’s confirmation, Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, issued the following statement:
“Dr. Lisa Cook’s confirmation brings an exciting and accomplished voice to an institution that has for far too long lacked representation that reflects American society. After a confirmation process marred by vicious and unfounded accusations, Dr. Cook’s outstanding experience and expertise will be vital as the Federal Reserve navigates major decisions.
“As the Federal Reserve faces the litany of issues threatening our economy, Dr. Cook’s perspectives on employment, equity, and inflation will steer the economy with an empathic eye and steady hand. Congratulations on her historic confirmation.”
