Evans Resignation a Reminder to Fund Pay-to-Play Reform

Statement of Aquene Freechild, Co-Director, Public Citizen’s Democracy Is For People Campaign

Note: On Tuesday, D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) announced he will resign from the city council following accusations of ethics violations.

Good riddance to this particularly corrupt D.C. councilmember. But Evans’ resignation is also an important reminder that critical pay-to-play reform legislation remains unfunded by the Council and the mayor’s office.

It’s past time Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Council fully fund this program to prevent such blatant corruption of public office and make D.C. politics less driven by political donations and more focused on residents.
