David Steiner As Postmaster General Would be Poised to Deliver on Trump’s Privatization Plan
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Postal Service Board of Governors appointed corporate CEO David Steiner, who also currently sits on USPS competitor FedEx’s board, to the position of Postmaster General and CEO of the United States Postal Service. In response, Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, released the following statement:
“Despite the public post office being enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, President Trump has made it clear that he wants to defy this historic institution’s universal service mandate by allowing it to be run as a business where profit is the controlling motive rather than ensuring equitable access– for rural and urban communities alike.
Given that David Steiner currently serves on the Board of FedEx, a direct competitor to the public Postal Service, what’s likely to come out of his leadership will be rubber stamping President Trump’s stated goal of privatizing the USPS, whether that be by selling off the USPS to the highest bidder or by parceling off its most lucrative parts to pad the pockets of wealthy donors.
Removing himself from the FedEx Board won’t change the fact that Steiner represents Corporate America. As the venerable Postal Service celebrates its 250th anniversary this summer, it’s shameful that Trump and his corporate cronies appear ready to degrade, dismantle or destroy this institution that predates the creation of our country, leaving seniors, veterans and others who rely on affordable mail delivery services for essential goods like medicines and support payments potentially out in the cold if a private postal service decides it’s unprofitable to deliver to them.”
