CVS-Aetna Merger Creates Corporate Goliath-Managed Parallel Health Care Universe
Statement of Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
Note: Today the U.S. Department of Justice approved CVS’ $69 billion acquisition of Aetna.
More concentrated corporate power is not going to fix the mess of out-of-control medicine prices and a dysfunctional health care system. The CVS-Aetna lockup, like other health sector mergers, may shift the relative balance of power between competing industry factions, but it is not likely to make medicines more affordable or improve health care provisions. Instead, it’s likely to generate even more irrationality, with consumers increasingly forced into corporate goliath-managed parallel health care universes, none of which offer satisfactory options or transparency.
