Congress Should Reject Trump Rescissions
WASHINGTON, D.C. — WASHINGTON, D.C. – The White House has reportedlysubmitted to Congress a proposal to formally rescind $9.4 billion in previously-allocated federal spending. The package which Congress must now decide to approve or reject, would primarily slash funding for public broadcasting and foreign aid.
In response, Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, said: “This proposal should be a non-starter in Congress. In addition to having devastating effects for actual people, it would mean rubber-stamping a portion of this administration’s reckless and lawless funding freeze – totalling hundreds of billions of dollars – while leaving the rest unaddressed. Members of Congress should be vigorously fighting to re-fund the programs gutted by the Trump-Musk agenda, not issuing a seal of approval for any part of it.”
“This is a low moment for our country,” said Peter Maybarduk, Access to Medicines director at Public Citizen, adding: “this President, having unconstitutionally obliterated foreign aid, is now asking members of Congress to bless the power he illegally took from them and the destruction he has wrought with it. Trump’s cuts will save no more than a rounding error, but cost America its credibility, and hundreds of thousands of people their very lives.”
