Congress Reintroduces The For The People Act
Legislation Is “The Reboot Our Democracy Urgently Requires”
Today, the U.S. House of Representatives reintroduced the groundbreaking democracy reform bill, the For the People Act (H.R. 1), which will provide sweeping democracy reforms.
In response, Lisa Gilbert, Executive Vice President of Public Citizen, released the following statement:
“As it should be, the For the People Act is again H.R. 1 – signaling the critical need for democracy reform in the wake of the most corrupt administration our country has ever seen. We applaud Speaker Nancy Pelosi, lead House sponsor Rep. John Sarbanes (MD-03), and the rest of the sponsors for reintroducing the most transformational reform legislation since Watergate.
“At a time when trust in government is at a historic low, this bill is a pivotal opportunity to tackle the corruption and norm-breaking of the Trump administration. H.R. 1’s passage will restore the American peoples’ faith in our system by addressing the corrupting influence of big money in politics, cleaning up the ethics quagmire of Washington, and protecting our right to vote.
“Our democracy depends on H.R. 1’s passage, and it should be Congress’ first order of business this year. We call on all members of the House to support H.R. 1, and for the Senate to quickly follow their lead. It’s time for a restored democracy that works for Americans, not just big business and the ultra-wealthy.”
