Congress Must Reject Trump’s Iran War Funding

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Trump has requested an $88 billion supplemental funding package from congress, in part to fund his illegal war on Iran.

In response, Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, issued the following statement:

“It’s clear enough what’s going on. Hegseth and Trump are jumping from one legislative option to another as their desperate attempts to shove a $1.5 trillion Pentagon budget down the public’s throat fail. Democrats have repeatedly voted to cut Trump’s Pentagon budget bill, and both Democrats and Republicans in the Senate are rejecting any talk of a third reconciliation bill.  So now Hegseth and Trump are circling back to their first deeply unpopular option for increasing the Pentagon budget – a supplemental funding bill for an illegal war on Iran that nobody asked for and everyone hates. This effort, like the others, will fail.

“Giving Trump and Hegseth more money for the Pentagon – whether it’s called appropriations, a war supplemental or reconciliation – means two things: More money for fighting wars in Iran and elsewhere; and money stolen away from America’s genuine priority needs to expand healthcare, provide food assistance, invest in education, address the climate crisis and much more.

“Congress must reject the supplemental appropriations request. If you are against the war in Iran, you must vote no on the supplemental. If you want to prevent Trump and Hegseth from launching more illegal and unconstitutional wars and military actions, you must vote no on the supplemental. If you want to prioritize healthcare, education and human needs, you must vote no on the supplemental.

“And no so-called sweetener should make any difference whatsoever. This is a bitter Pentagon potion that no one should swallow.”
