Clean Budget Coalition Applauds House Members Who Have Joined Together in Opposing Policy Riders
Statement of Nearly 200 Groups Opposed to Ideological Policy Riders
The Clean Budget Coalition (PDF) – nearly 200 groups united against policy riders in the budget – applauds U.S. Reps. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), G. K. Butterfield (D-N.C.) and 162 other members of the U.S. House of Representatives who have signed a letter calling on House leaders to bring to the floor an omnibus spending bill with no policy riders.
Hundreds of these harmful provisions have been added into appropriations bills. These riders would deny women access to the health care provider of their choice; block safeguards that protect our homes, pocketbooks and workplaces; lower standards that keep our food, air, land, wildlife and water safe; roll back Wall Street reforms; threaten consumers with more rip-offs and dangerous products; undermine fundamental workers’ rights; and much, much more.
These divisive and controversial provisions do not belong in government funding bills and could not pass as freestanding legislation. Lawmakers who are sneaking them into must-pass spending bills are circumventing the democratic process and trying to avoid a real debate. They hope the public won’t notice their special favors for ideological extremists and sweetheart deals for big business, which would harm middle-class families and working Americans.
The Clean Budget Coalition stands in solidarity with the 165 members of Congress calling on the House leadership to end the destructive brinkmanship of recent years and pass a clean budget without poison pill riders.
