Charitable Nonprofits to Host Virtual Press Conference and Launch National Sign-On Letter to Defend Nonpartisanship in the Nonprofit Sector

Nonprofit Organizations Across the Country Unite to Preserve Nonprofits’ Ability to Serve Communities Without Political Interference

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Wednesday, July 30th at 10:00 AM Eastern Time, leaders from the National Council of Nonprofits, Freedom from Religion Foundation, Interfaith Alliance, Public Citizen, American Humanist Association, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and other leading nonprofit organizations will host a joint virtual press conference to urge for the protection of nonpartisanship in the nonprofit sector.

The groups will discuss their objections to efforts by the Trump Administration to weaken the Johnson Amendment, a longstanding federal law that protects nonprofits from partisan politics by prohibiting 501(c)(3) organizations from endorsing or opposing political candidates. During the event, the groups will also launch a national sign-on letter that already holds nearly 1,000 signatures, calling on Congress to uphold nonprofit nonpartisanship.
