WASHINGTON — President Trump’s super PAC MAGA Inc. will hold a $ 1-million-per-plate fundraiser at Trump’s Virginia golf club on Saturday, a day ahead of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Freedom 250 event slated for the White House lawn a day later, according to reports.
This corporate-sponsored event highlights the mingling of private and public interests that characterize Trump’s takeover of the 250th anniversary celebration.
Earlier this week, an analysis by Public Citizen and the Revolving Door Project found that Trump’s 250th anniversary events have steered $103 million in taxpayer dollars to “Freedom 250” events associated with Trump’s political allies, which 20 corporations sponsor.”
The UFC cage match is being held in “the octagon,” a 30-foot cage now set up on the White House lawn. This spectacle is being overseen by longtime Trump friend Dana White, the president of UFC, which is owned by TKO Group, whose CEO Ari Emanuel was formerly Trump’s agent.
In response, Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, issued the following statement:
“The co-mingling of 250th anniversary events, Trump’s UFC fight, and a $1 million per-plate fundraiser on Trump’s own birthday gives corporate interests and wealthy donors not just an ultimate fight – but the ultimate opportunity to pay tribute to the president. Rather than celebrate our nation’s anniversary in the bipartisan manner directed by Congress, the Trump administration has directed public money and public property to politicized events. Major corporations, such as Chevron, Exxon, MasterCard, and many more, should be ashamed to be associated with this corrupt spectacle.”
