Biden’s Outstanding Pick for OCC Will Lead on Climate-Related Financial Risk

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Joe Biden will nominate Saule Omarova, a law professor who has criticized cryptocurrencies, advocated for strong financial regulation, and developed an innovative plan for boosting public investment, to head the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC).

“Omarova is an outstanding choice for Comptroller of the Currency. She is smart, fair, tough, and experienced. We expect she will use the full powers of this office to hold Wall Street accountable, advance racial equity, and take on climate-related financial risk,” said David Arkush, managing director of Public Citizen’s climate program.

“Prof. Omarova’s authoritative articles span the important issues facing the banking sector today – from the risks of securities trading to the merger of banking and traditional commerce to emergency lending by the Federal Reserve,” said Bartlett Naylor, financial policy advocate for Public Citizen.
