Assembly Member Chiu and Public Citizen to Discuss the Recently Passed SB 17, California’s Prescription Drug Transparency Legislation

WHAT: Join California Assembly Member David Chiu (D-17) and Public Citizen’s Access to Medicines program director, Peter Maybarduk, as they talk about their work and support in getting California’s SB 17, a prescription medicine pricing transparency bill, passed this session and signed into law. The lawmaker and prescriptions advocacy expert will explain what it took to pass legislation in California that protects the public interest and how we can fight against exorbitant costs for lifesaving pharmaceuticals.

Under the legislation, companies would have to alert health insurers at least 60 days before they raise the price of a medicine if the increase is at least 16 percent over two years. The requirement applies to medicines that have wholesale prices of at least $40 for a course of therapy. Companies also would have to provide explanations for price increases.
