Appeals Court Decision On “Emergency” Tariffs Welcome Check on Trump’s Power Grab
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a 7-4 ruling, a federal appeals court struck down President Trump’s use of emergency powers to impose sweeping, “reciprocal” tariffs on dozens of countries. In response, Melinda St. Louis, director of Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch, issued the following statement:
“Today’s decision is a welcome push back on Trump’s corrupt power grab. Straight from the authoritarian playbook, Trump’s sweeping tariffs, like the rest of his economic policies, are an equal mix of corrupt payoffs to the billionaire class and utter chaos.
“Trump has used these chaotic tariffs to bully other countries in backroom ‘deals’ that have done nothing to benefit U.S. workers, but have advanced the profit-seeking agendas of Big Tech, Big Oil and other billionaire friends as well as Trump’s own agenda to get foreign leaders and U.S. CEOs to bend the knee to their ‘dear leader.’
“The question remains: Will the Supreme Court finally take a stand against his authoritarian power grab in this case?”
