AMA May Push Drug Makers To Include Prices In Advertisements

Some doctors within the American Medical Association want the group to begin lobbying for legislation and regulation that requires drugmakers to include prices in their direct-to-consumer advertisements.

Several doctor groups within the AMA’s policymaking House of Delegates this weekend will ask the nation’s largest doctor group to back regulations and legislation that calls for more transparency in drug pricing. The AMA has long been skeptical of direct-to-consumer advertising, believing drugmakers push the most expensive prescriptions onto their patients.

Advertising prices would go a long way to helping educate consumers so they can better understand the true cost of drugs at a time prescription costs are busting employer and government healthcare budgets, doctors within the AMA say.
