After Comey Firing, Trump’s Tax Returns Matter More Than Ever
Statement of Lisa Gilbert, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Public Citizen
President Donald Trump just admitted to The Economist that he may not release his tax returns until after he’s left office, claiming once again that no one but reporters care about the information found in them. While it’s great to see him stop pretending that his imaginary audit is keeping him from releasing his returns, the idea that no one cares about his tax returns is what is actually imagined.
With the backdrop of the Comey firing, it is even more critical that the public understand his financial ties, if any, to nations like Russia, and the public is demanding that more loudly than ever. We also have a right to know whether these ties mean that he is personally profiting from the presidency and how his finances could impact our safety.
Public Citizen calls for the Presidential Tax Transparency Act to be brought to the floor for a vote and applauds the discharge petition working to make that a reality. Members of Congress must be on the record on the need for Trump transparency.
