Statement by Public Citizen President Joan Claybrook
On Senate Vote On 0.08 Blood Alcohol Limit

Today’s vote by the Senate to support a national 0.08 percent blood alcohol concentration law is a huge victory against drunk driving. The industry s arguments have been totally discredited, and its credibility shredded.

Everyone’s ability to drive is impaired at 0.08 BAC and the limit will prevent 600 deaths every year.

Only the alcohol industry is against this life-saving legislation, while doctors, nurses, consumer and safety organizations, insurers, the police, the families of alcohol victims, and the general public all support it.
