Floor Debate Begins for U.S. Secretary of State Nominee, U.S. Senate Cannot Deny That Rex Tillerson’s Evasive Non-Answers and Climate Change Denial Disqualify Him from Service

Statement of David Arkush, Managing Director of Public Citizen’s Climate Program

Rex Tillerson’s coziness with Putin and other authoritarians, his callousness to human rights abuses and his denial of the greatest threat facing the U.S., —climate change —should disqualify him from serving as U.S. secretary of state.

Since Tillerson’s dodging, equivocating, know-nothing performance at his confirmation, the Trump administration has only given us more reason for concern on matters involving the State Department. Nothing about Tillerson’s responses to the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations suggests that he would fight unconstitutional, un-American policies like Trump’s recent Muslim ban. More likely, he will be a pushover or a willing partner to Donald Trump’s abuses.

*Public Citizen produced a video chronicling Rex Tillerson’s evasions, half-truths and denials during his confirmation hearings before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
