Today in Federal Energy Regulatory Commission docket EC23-99, Indiana Citizens Action Coalition joined Public Citizen to protest Blackstone’s effort to buy 19.9% of NiSource’s Northern Indiana Public Service Company―a utility with 483,000 captive electric customers. Our protest exposes that the purpose of the transaction is to exploit legislation signed into law in May that grants the Indiana utility a monopoly on electricity transmission projects. Weeks after securing this anti-competitive legislation, the private equity titan swoops in to secure a stake to extract unjust and unreasonable rates from hundreds of thousands of households.
