On Medicare’s Anniversary, Lawmakers, Advocates and Physicians Renew Call for Single-Payer
Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act (H.R. 676) Would Provide Health Care for All – More Efficiently Than Current System
WHAT: Press conference by a coalition of members of Congress, academics, physicians, advocates and other supporters to call for Medicare to be expanded into a national, single-payer healthcare system that could cover more Americans, more efficiently and with better outcomes, at a lower cost than the current system. The groups also will release a report on the financing of the single-payer plan in H.R. 676, The Expanded & Improved Medicare For All Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.). The event will mark the 48th anniversary of Medicare, which was signed into law on July 30, 1965.
The press conference, organized by Public Citizen’s Health Care Counsel Dave Sterrett and moderated by Conyers, will be preceded by a congressional briefing on how to finance single-payer and followed by lobbying visits by activists.
Other groups participating in the briefing and visits include All Unions Committee for Single Payer Healthcare–HR 676, Healthcare-Now!, Labor Campaign for Single Payer Healthcare and Kentuckians for Single Payer Health Care. The briefing will be held at 11 a.m. in Room 121 of the Cannon House Office Building.
