Trump Administration Seeks to Reverse Fuel Efficiency Standards for Heavy Truck Engines
WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) today announced it would move to roll back fuel efficiency standards for medium and heavy-duty truck engines, according to a release. The NHTSA seeks to weaken fuel economy standards for heavy-duty commercial vehicles in such a way that it would no longer be allowed to regulate medium or heavy-duty truck engines. In response, Will Anderson, EV policy advocate with Public Citizen’s Climate Program, issued the following statement:
“This latest attempted rollback by Trump is yet another giveaway to the oil and gas industry, the effects of which will increase fuel costs for truckers and in turn, raise the cost of consumer goods. At a time of already high fuel prices, not to mention already high consumer prices in general, the weakening of fuel efficiency standards hurts everyone already suffering under Trump’s unaffordable economy. We need strong fuel efficiency standards so that Americans can go farther for less, while curbing the emissions driving the climate crisis.”
