Public Citizen Health Research Group researcher Dr. James Floyd and director Dr. Sidney Wolfe submitted a letter to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in response to an article by Drs. Sessions and Lee (JAMA. 2008;300(16):1929-1931) that advocates for health care reform in the form of a regressive value-added tax (VAT) to finance vouchers for private health insurance.
Public Citizen argues that such a system would do nothing to drive down wasteful administrative spending or prevent the harmful practices of private insurers that leave patients with poor health care.
