Statement: McConnell Continues to Hold Aid Hostage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) introduced legislation Tuesday that would tie $2,000 stimulus checks to a repeal of Section 230 and the creation of a commission to study election fraud. Lisa Gilbert, executive vice president at Public Citizen, released the following statement:

“Since the U.S. House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act 8 months ago, the American people have been waiting for desperately needed additional aid. But only last week, when confronted with the reality of an incoming government shutdown, did McConnell and the GOP caucus concede and allow for the passage of a smaller band-aid stimulus bill.

“To bolster the passed stimulus package, the House has passed a bipartisan bill to up individual aid checks to $2,000, but painfully Mitch McConnell is sabotaging the aid with poison pill riders. The facts concerning the 2020 election are crystal clear, there was no widespread fraud, and Republicans and President Donald Trump have seized on this false narrative as a mechanism to attempt to reverse the clear election results.

“The Senate should move the check increase bill because it is the right thing to do for the American people, and not condition it on this partisan poison pill.”
