Public Citizen Announces Nominations for ‘Trumpy’ Awards – Recognizing the Worst of the Worst

Nominations Coming Daily Until Winner Announced at State of the Union

WASHINGTON, D.C. – It’s awards season, and Public Citizen is joining in the spirit with the Trumpys – recognizing the worst members of the most conflict-ridden administration in U.S. history.

Public Citizen will announce nominations in a different category every day through Jan. 29 and invite Twitter users to vote on them. The losers – or rather, winners – will be announced on Jan. 30, the day of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address. Forthcoming categories include Most Anti-Democratic Action, Cruelest Policy Choice and Worst Cabinet Member.

“Donald Trump is likely to be remembered by history as America’s worst president. But as we live through the disaster of his presidency, we don’t need to wait for history to make its judgment. Public Citizen will recognize the worst of the worst of this administration with the Trumpy awards,” said Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen.

Monday’s nominees, for the Worst Corrupting Conflicts of Interest, are:

  • Carl Icahn, who tried to use his position in the White House to force a change in ethanol rules to save his oil refinery $200 million a year;

  • Jared Kushner, who – like his father-in-law – still has not divested from his financial holdings, creating a multitude of conflicts, especially in regard to his role in setting U.S. policy related to the Middle East;

  • The Trump tax bill, which will transfer more than a trillion dollars to the superrich and the corporate class, including to Trump personally and his superrich Cabinet members; and

  • The Trump International Hotel and Mar-a-Lago, two properties owned by the president where foreign governments and interest groups spend their money to curry favor with Trump.

Which corrupting conflict is the worst? You decide.
