Organizers of Thursday Protests Are Available to Explain Why Tens of Thousands Turned Out Nationwide, What’s Next

Public Citizen Was a Lead Organizer of Protests Over Trump’s Assault on the Mueller Investigation

Representatives from Public Citizen – one of the lead organizers of the nationwide protests held Thursday to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation – are available to explain what prompted the protests and what’s next.

On Thursday, Americans across the country hit the streets in “Nobody Is Above the Law” protests. Public Citizen worked for more than a year for the day that President Donald Trump would cross a red line to undermine the investigation, which Trump did on Wednesday by firing Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Lisa Gilbert, vice president of legislative affairs for Public Citizen, has been a key organizer of the effort. She also was one of two emcees at the Washington, D.C., event in front of the White House, which packed Lafayette Square.

Robert Weissman, Public Citizen’s president, spoke at the protest and can explain why it’s important to democracy to protect Mueller’s investigation.

People on Thursday demanded that Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker – Sessions’ former chief of staff – recuse himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation based on his past public comments criticizing the legitimacy of the probe. Whitaker is inappropriate to oversee the Russia investigation and must not do so because he would supplant Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and hinder the Mueller investigation.
