An Unhappy Ford Birthday; Consumer and Environmental Groups Take Out Ad to Highlight Ford’s Anti-Consumer, Anti-Climate Attempts to Roll Back Clean Car Standards

Statement of Madeline Page, Clean Cars Campaign Coordinator, Public Citizen

Note: As Ford Motor Company today celebrates its 115th year in business, Public Citizen, Sierra Club, Greenpeace USA and Safe Climate Campaign took out a full page ad in both The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press to condemn Ford’s efforts with the Trump administration to roll back the nations fuel economy and greenhouse gas emissions standards, known as the clean car standards. Finalized under the Obama administration, these standards have saved consumers more than $60 billion at the gas pump and cut dangerous climate pollution, and would save more than 2 million barrels of oil per day by 2025. See the ad [PDF].

It may be Ford’s party, but the only ones crying will be Americans forced to breathe dirtier air and spend thousands more at the pump. Ford could be celebrating with sustainable practices that ensure it has customers for the next 100 years. Instead, the company’s dangerous work behind the scenes with the Trump administration to roll back clean car standards endanger American families and mark a U-turn for progress on curbing climate change.
