Public Citizen Expert to Testify on Reforms Needed to Regain Public Trust in D.C. Government

Testimony Will Cover Office of Campaign Finance’s Hits and Misses Over Past Year

WHAT: Aquene Freechild, co-director of Public Citizen’s Democracy Is For People Campaign, will testify before the D.C. Council Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety on how the critical work of the Office of Campaign Finance (OCF) can be reformed to enhance fair and effective campaign finance enforcement in D.C.

OCF exerts effort on audits and enforcement actions, but the outcomes can be uneven, such as in cases when it does not take action against illegal political contributions, Freechild will say. Freechild will encourage the OCF to prioritize larger cases of misconduct and negotiate with candidates to avoid harsh punishment in low-level cases. A cultural shift and increase in activity at the OCF is needed to regain the public’s trust, Freechild will say.

WHEN: 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 8

WHO: Aquene Freechild, co-director, Public Citizen’s Democracy Is For People Campaign

WHERE: Room 123, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave., NW Washington, D.C.
