Need for Bipartisan Congressional Legislation to Protect Mueller Is Obvious

Note: U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) joined Sens. Chris Coons (D-Del.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) today to merge two bills to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s from being fired. The group will urge the Senate Judiciary Committee to take up their joint legislation and pass it immediately. The group’s bipartisanship is more important than ever after President Donald Trump responded to Monday’s FBI raid of his personal lawyer Michael Cohen’s office by indicating that he may move to end the special counsel investigation.
The need for a focused congressional response to the attacks on the Russia investigation has never been more obvious.
Over the past several days, we’ve seen President Trump and his surrogates refuse to close the door on a Mueller firing when asked, and with the investigation getting ever closer to the truth, safeguards to protect the investigation from President Trump’s unpredictable whims must be put in place.
We applaud the bipartisan cooperation of these senators to create this additional, necessary check, as the investigation to get to the bottom of Russian election interference continues. We urge Sen. Chuck Grassley to move this unified bill through the Judiciary Committee and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to bring it to the Senate floor. American democracy the rule of law and election security demands it.
