MEDIA ADVISORY

Nearly 100 National Groups to Call for Fundamental Political Improvements and Rebuilding America’s Democracy

Historically Broad and Diverse Nonpartisan Coalition Will Press for Reforms That Empower Americans

WHAT: Telephone press conference to announce that nearly 100 democracy advocates and groups of conscience are launching a campaign to pass the voting rights, ethics and money-in-politics reforms the people have demanded throughout the 2018 election cycle. The campaign will begin the day after the Nov. 6 election. The full list of the Declaration for American Democracy coalition members can be found here.

At an unprecedented level, the public is demanding democracy reforms. This coalition is a response to the public’s calls for a renewed democracy in which everyone participates, every vote is counted, voting rights are enforced and everyone’s voice is heard. The public wants immediate change because our system is in crisis, resulting in policy outcomes that negatively impact them. Wealthy corporate interests regularly flout the foundational principles of fairness, equity and respect for the rule of law, and polls show that as a result, the public is fed up with a government without checks.

During a time of relentless attacks on democracy and voting rights, the groups are calling for greater transparency and the importance of providing more – rather than less – access to our basic freedoms and right of self-determination.
